How democracy survived Trump

My conversation on “Morning Joe” today, recalling a debate from ten years ago

Friends,

How are you feeling this Friday? It’s a good Friday, whatever tradition you come from. Good because democracy had a great week.

This morning, I was on “Morning Joe” discussing the historic slapping down of Trump’s authoritarian attempt.

We got to talking about another conversation we had on the show exactly ten years earlier, a bookend to this one. Back then, we were debating — sometimes heatedly — whether American institutions would protect us against the newly elected president. Today we revised that conversation and took stock of how well democracy held up.

The earlier conversation, from 2016, is below. Please ignore the volume of my hair. You thought it was voluminous now! But do note how authoritarianism causes graying.

And a request. For the last many years, and especially after Trump’s second election, The Ink has worked to keep you sane, informed, and hopeful. If you have valued this work of ours, please consider subscribing. It will help us keep going — without fear.
