What we've learned from "Abundance"
Authors Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson got us thinking big about solving society's biggest problems — today we'll talk more about how to follow through
Join us today, Wednesday, May 28, at 12:30 Eastern, for our final Book Club discussion of Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s Abundance. Download the Substack app and turn on notifications to join, or watch on our homepage.
Since we announced the Ink Book Club on April 29, thousands of you have come to play! Thank you for bringing your savvy — and your civility — to our discussions of Abundance. Many of you engaged with our Sunday post, asking what you’d tackle in a sequel to Abundance, so we’re focusing today’s discussion on breaking down some of those ideas. (For the record, the authors vehemently deny there will be an Abundance Redux, but a book club can dream.)
Abundance may not lay out a miracle fix for our myriad problems, but it offers glimmers of hope and is a great jumping off point for thinking about solutions.
Reader Jim Hollahan posted that the book “slowed me down and got me thinking. My anger at the current political process has gotten in my way of trying to imagine the future. Taking the time to read, reflect and think has grounded me. And doing it with a group of people has helped me feel connected and not alone!”
So let’s imagine the future together. If you missed Sunday’s post (or you’ve thought about it some more since), drop your ideas for what a sequel to Abundance might cover in the comments below. And join us today at 12:30 p.m. Eastern, on Substack Live.
See you then, and bring a friend!
How to participate in the Book Club
We’ll post questions — our discussion guide — every Sunday, and each Wednesday we’ll meet for a discussion with the Club or a visit from an author or other special guest. Look out for posts with details. We’ll also host chat threads to get your insight on key questions in advance of our meetings.
To join Book Club discussions or any of our Live conversations, download the Substack app (click on the button below) and turn on notifications — you’ll get an alert once we’re live, and you can watch from your iOS or Android mobile device. If you prefer just to watch, you can also join from your browser; the conversation will be available on our homepage. We won’t be able to call you up to speak on video, but you can participate in the text chat.
