I am serious when I suggest we formalize and encourage the line dancing in the streets. I understand that in England, they often bring a samba band along to their protests. How will they be able to prove their “riot” narrative when people are dancing?
How about a parade—maybe a Country of Immigrants Parade—people marching in brigades, d’americano an other Ethnic/Cultural flags waving, music, even costume.
I’d like to add that Los Angeles is where the First Motion Picture Unit (led by Jack Warner of Warner Bros) produced educational films the help bring Americans together to fight fascism during WWII. Hollywood’s storytelling power is a threat to Trump!
Looking back over our (Americans') resistance that I've personally experienced - since the 60s, I'm seeing a 50-50 chance that this chapter of resistance will rise to the level needed (needed for minimal salvaging of institutions and rule of law). I just don't know. How strong, how courageous will we be?
I’ve lost all faith in democratic leadership. Substack is calling out, connecting, facilitating and validating. And I thank you. These days, the resistance is proving to be so, so much braver than the liberal “leaders”. Is there so much inertia that the liberals cannot coordinate to take back the country? Will the house members join the protests this weekend? Individuals are speaking up, but I’m not seeing a response commensurate with the urgency of the situation. The minority leadership clearly can’t or won’t rise to the occasion. I don’t want to entertain the hypothesis that rather convincingly demonstrates that history inevitably repeats itself; we have the trappings of an evolved society, but we’re fooling ourselves. Anything close to democracy inevitably succumbs to power and greed; the pesky constituent and our beautiful planet be damned. How will the root cause ever be addressed in the foreseeable future. I don’t see it as long as we’re driven by opportunism and competition; and a shallow, shallow notion of success. Unless we’re willing to invest in education, rewarding thinking, empathy and cooperation, I don’t see how it ends. I could go on and I’m sorry for venting. But putting all the intellectual exercises aside, sometimes we need to go back to first principles. And as long as key societal norms for a working democracy are not rewarded, then in my experience nothing changes. You can win the battle but not the war.
Do you follow the historians and professors? What is happening in LA is all part of the retribution of this regime. Newsom has to be vigilant because they are using him and California as examples.
I do. Just read a recent post by Chris Hedges. He’s all kinds of brilliant and I want to be careful when I say this. But that kind of intellect doesn’t translate to the people who need to hear it most. I think that’s a problem with liberals in general. They don’t always read the room and generally spend time with like minds. Trump is heinous, but he recognized the power of the disenfranchised. And the dems didn’t seem to think they needed to.
Ps I do appreciate that the dems have to be careful that they don’t provoke Trumps wrath. It must be a very tough balance. But that doesn’t excuse Schumer.
Wow. I should also add proud to know you. I need to come clean. I’m Canadian (if it didn’t already seem obvious from my comments). Frankly I’m very invested in what’s happening in the US. I’d have an easier time dealing with an invasion of aliens. My heart breaks to see the suffering this regime has caused in just a few months. I have spent a lot of time trying to coalesce my thoughts on how we got here and how we move on. And I say we, because, most Canadians think of it that way.
Very good! I love Canadians! I was born and raised on the Canadian border in Montana. Even though I was born in Montana, I lived almost 60 years in California. So you can imagine I am a bit upset with the regime's recent actions in California. I appreciate your interest in the US. I think our insanity definitely influenced your recent election. Thank heavens Canadians are more intelligent than most Americans.
I wouldn’t even try to compare the two countries. Of their people. Just the sheer number of people and the differences from state to state, 50 of them! And let’s not forget, Canadians fell for mini Trump and if we hadn’t been wacked with the idea of being annexed, we’d have a horrible human running the country. What happens to you happens to you matters to your neighbour.
I’m worried that Trump will use the 14th as an opportunity to declare martial law. It would almost be better not to protest. It would drive him nuts that nobody paid attention to his birthday. I’ll stay tuned and will be with you in solidarity.
Thanks for that. My frustration level is pretty high. The changes that need to happen are fundamental and frankly obvious in their simplicity. Simple but hardly a quick fix. Most systemic problems need patience and serious leadership to fix. And cooperation. Not sure how well the current architecture can support standardized curricula and adequate funding to enable cultural change. In the short term in would help if someone grew a spine and started shouting from every roof top that “We, the democrats, need to make fundamental changes. While we improved many things, we understand that change didn’t make it to your front door. And you were so angry that you took the risk to vote for a sociopath rather than the Democratic Party.”
Eddie Claude just said on Nicole's show - I'm paraphrasing - get every Dem Leader out to LA. Let them show up on the streets to de-escalate this abomination which is not an insurrection but which is a disgrace. Write your Senators.
I taught parenting classes for years , helping families adapt to democratic attitudes. There was always a faction resisting losing their ‘right’ to ‘spank’ hit and hurt kids, and kept corporal punishment in schools. The insistence on keeping authoritarian systems vs authoritative informed power sharing is a hard root to change.
"How do you think about the imperative of warning ... and the imperative of not handing over the keys accidentally through the act of warning." Great question.
I would like to see our Democratic (the party, that is) "leaders" fly to Los Angeles and be part of the protests on the streets. I would like to see them holding signs just like many of the other protesters. But their signs should be things like "Stay Calm" and "Be Cool" and "No Violence".
Let them show that they are both "leaders" and part of the resistance at the same time.
Great article about Obama in The Atlantic. It was an eye opener to me. It's noticeable that he is mostly silent. We have very few elected leaders speaking out against the regime. Chris Murphy is vocal but does the worthless party support him? Perhaps Obama, and other people, get their moments of fame and MONEY and "retire" into an easy life. I always admired Obama so I am very disappointed in his lack of involvement. I respect that he, and his family, are tired of the lies, hatred, and condemnation but what about his values and what he stood for? What happened to his righteous anger I voted for?

Yes! Where are the leaders? ….and others.
I’ve been to three protests so far. Mostly old/seniors at the marches.
Where are the young people?
Will be out on June 14! Was out for Vietnam , student rights in the 60’s. Everyone needs to participate now!
Love from the land of Bernie!

The aggressor is the TACO regime. Protesters are reacting to the aggressor. TACO is itching for a fight. Protesters are itching for justice.
Cannot stand the old guard Dems on any one issue or strategy.
Right. Their main concern will be to damp down and control protest

Be safe on the weekend
Thank you! I appreciate your words. I have marched for peace and justice since the 60's but we live in a very different world now.

By the way.... I blame most of the worthless dems for the regime in office. OLD Chuck is worthless! I am sickened by the spineless dems.
Where do you live in Canada?🇨🇦
I think the dems are equally responsible. Absolutely.
Cheers and again, please be careful. Trump now says he wants to arrest Newsom. He’s just looking for a reason to call up martial law.
In a village close to Ottawa. After many years in Toronto I needed quiet.

Don't ever apologize for speaking your truth!

Take care
I will be protesting on the 14th with every single person who has a spine to stand up to tyranny!
Thank you kindly.
Fossilized indeed. Exactly Schumer!

Not sure writing your senators will generally have this effect
Thank you for a great show. Resist the regime!

I don't think any of us know where this is going to go. So appreciate all of you for bringing us expertise and perspective.

The security forces hit someone and media say “violence has broken out”

Yes Where are CA senators? Not on the streets in LA.
