The tone of this conversation does not reflect the terrifying situation we are in and the angst we are feeling. It sounds like more of the same complacency typical of Dem representatives. We don't have the luxury of time to play by the rules...especially if, as you say, our democracy could crumble in months. I would like to hear that there are competent strategists who are planning how to logistically take down this administration...with whatever means required to do so.

Marta here is a piece I wrote today which recognizes the seriousness of the situation.

There are not competent strategists to take down this administration. That is reality. There are people filing a lot of lawsuits. The Democratic party does not know how to meet the moment, even if some people within the party are able to. The old rules need to be thrown out.

People saying call your representatives need to understand the problem in southern states, like in TN. Over half of our representatives run unopposed due to gerrymandering. They don’t care how much we call or complain. We’re past the “let’s talk this out” phase. They’re destroying government agencies, it took Hitler only 53 days. People want to see the same anger they feel, in their representatives actions.

Give us "what to do's" If you know all this...besides telling us what's wrong. Why can't you and all elected Dems join together and organize #wethepeople in whatever ways we need to, especially if this is worse than Civil War moment in time. I'm a lifelong activist Dem and I am sick & tired of just hearing and watching all that is wrong like the frog in boiling water moment, except we are the frogs who know we are boiling. It's torture! I'm serious.

Hi, Anand and once again, thank you! I find these short, direct interviews to be very, very useful. I would imagine that getting influential people on the calendar to be interviewed live isn't easy, so I appreciate all the effort it takes to make these happen. Any other "friends of the pod" you could interview? Any House representatives out there who would be game?

I am continuously grateful for your brave and outspoken work. Please don't stop.

Anne

Well done. Kudos for making this available to everyone, unlike others who hide behind their paywalls. The best way to expand your voice is to allow everyone to hear it.

If the DNC's new leadership doesn't first address all the issues of voter suppression, their rhetoric and even their candidates won't matter. People are not going to pay attention to and/or donate to campaigns if main focus of Dems is not to ensure that our votes will be counted (in the various ways that happens). You can be sure GOP/MAGA is discovering new ways to suppress and void our votes, as they go full speed with shock & awe to divert us from their focused effort: to be sure no Democrat is ever elected again. Our elections will be fake like Russia.

Totally agree.

Tell constituents to call their Republican legislators!!! This is a “we the people” problem!

I agree. I live in a Red State and write and call continuously. But their strategy right now is to ignore or pacify, giving no real responses. This is deliberate. They want us to shut up, and believe that if they continue in this way that they'll subdue us, shut off the opposition.

So far, they're right. It's going to take bravery to save the government that we want to have. We can't rely on the Congress, the courts, or our military. It will have to be the people. And we're going to have to be uncomfortable.

As Senator Murphy said, it's clear that many of the Maga/Republicans are okay with what is going on.

Donald Trump‘s OMB guy, Russell Vought, makes no bones about what he calls our “post constitutionalist era” that he feels compelled to usher in as soon as possible. He’s the chief project 2025 architect.

This is perhaps a more serious moment than the Civil War. If the North had lost the war, in all likelihood, it would still have been a democratic nation, albeit much reduced. If we lose this battle against the looming Trump totalitarian state, we will quickly have no recognizable democracy. And this time the struggle is internal with Trump & Co. already holding the reins of power.

With all due respect Michael, if the North were to have lost the civil war, then Black people would still be enslaved. That is NOT a democracy.

Trump is talking about TAKING 50% of the mineral spoils from Ukraine, along with Russia. This is NOT about a social change to a kingdom. It is nothing LES THAN an oligarchic takeover. Thuggery. Evil. We are Pre-war Germany.

It is worse than pre-War Germany, just without the war.

It is in everyone’s best interests to view this video and take immediate actions in anyway they can to push back against this coup taking place in our political system and way of life! Senator Murphy is straight forward and blunt with respect to what is taking place in our political system and government this very second! Call your Senators, Congressional reps and voice your opposition!

At min 30:00 - If you are serious about opposing Trump and Musk, wouldn't knowing whether or not Musk is violating the law be a critical bit of information? Does the senator not have lawyers or a lawyer on staff that could take some time and analyze Musk's actions in relation to the Constitution, federal law and regulatory statutes and make an educated statement about Musk's likely criminality? This seems to me to be a key component of any reasonable action going forward. How are Musk's actions to date NOT part of the overall threat to democracy that the senator says he is working against?

That was one of the most surprising parts of the interview. The senator doesn’t “know” if Mump’s acts are illegal?! Wtf? They’re blatantly unconstitutional! Doesn’t take an attorney to see that.

Exactly.

The old guard needs to give way: Why should seniority still bog down the Dems

Expand full comment

Because seniority and playing it safe is all they know how to do... and Democratic voters have been fine with that dysfunction for decades.

We’ll lose…

If the factions of the Democratic Party don’t come together like GOP/MAGA does. Including networks, social media, influencers, etc. We have to work together, having thousands of people withholding their vote due to one issue is petty.

We have to stop asking about who is running for President in four years - Murphy tackled the question well. We have to meet the moment, there may not be another election in four years if we don't. This is playing by the old political playbook which is about to be disabled in zero seconds flat. The next democratic candidate for President is pie in the sky, if we don't have a democracy anymore.
