Love the question about Abundance. That whole “movement” has been bothering me and now I can see it as lack of class awareness around power dynamics, from the mouths of people who do not make a living from their own physical labor.
I loved the article about the Democrats by Harold Meyerson. It’s exactly where I am hoping for the Democrats (or some NEW party to go). I think he describes where we can hope to unify workers on the Right AND the Left. I found the debate he described between abundance and regulation to be a bit confusing. I wish he had said more about it.
This is precisely where I’d like to see our politics go. I’m afraid that this is a very awkward forum for that discussion, though (the chat on a list of many possible topics).
It’s a great article. And ‘abundance’ as a movement is DOA, it’s the stuff of paper pushers, which should be working in the background, but doesn’t meet the energy we need right now. I’m ready to find a new party!
I’m paying attention to SAM (the Save America Movement) on Substack. Rev. William Barber, Steve Schmidt (former Republican), and others. Acknowledging that we aren’t going back to what we had before. Requires some new thinking.
A question I would like to see spotlighted: what the hell about SNAP benefits evaporating? Hunger in America is already obscene. Why are we not outraged?
Everyone is outraged about everything all the time, and yet that’s not sustainable or productive. There is a long line of suffering, and competing for your own platform isn’t the way.
Will Teheran suffer same fate as Gaza? Asking this question is evidence of a complete lack of understanding of the Iranian Regime since 1979 and of how dangerous it is to huge parts of the world, not just Israel.
(PS - About Gaza: If the world had truly pressured Hamas to release the hostages, the war (yes it is a war, however asymmetric in weaponry and tactics) could probably have been concluded within eight to 12 months. Appeasement and appeals to "de-escalation" are often the path to horrific destruction.)
Commenting on a headline instead of taking a moment to read the article before you start using your keyboard "is evidence of a complete lack of understanding" how useful participation in online discussions work. The whole point of the article is to humanize the experience of an innocent civilian population suffering because of the actions of their government.
PS - About Gaza: Israel's response to Oct. 7 has nothing to do with the release of the hostages. Israel's boot on the neck of the innocent civilians of Gaza for almost 60 years and "mowing the lawn" from time to time hasn't been enough for the fascists in Israel's current government, so they launched a violent indiscriminate War Crime ethnic cleansing and genocide.
Great contemplation prompts. I'll respond to one--'Is shame still a thing?' I hope so. Shame is a driver of insight and evolution. Without it, there's only greed, lust and all other evils.
So many great questions, as to the courts, I think most have received the memo, and know their deliberations can’t and won’t be the same. Also @katiephang made a good observation yesterday, Trumps attorneys, the DOJ, is still showing up in court. So that’s my personal positive take for the morning.
