I LOVE the analogy of oligarchs and abusers! BRILLIANT! You couldn’t be more on track! I love the way you think!

Iris Weaver's avatar

They are both about authoritarian control.

Anyone who has ever been threatened or abused has witnessed this method of “turning the tables.”

Thank You for identifying this so that we can root it out in our locales.

I feel a wave coming on…

This seems to be a common theme with the oligarch/tech bro class as of late. Apologize in advance for the shit storm they have created and pretend like it's all inevitable. But We the People, the regular folks know deep BS when we see it because we have to live IRL, pay our bills and taxes. That's why serious push back is building against giant server farms in communities which are sucking up water as well as booing these shit bags at graduation ceremonies. I think AI is being tee'd up to be very consequential in the 2028 presidential election. Smart politicians will be staking out positions supporting serious regulatory legislation of AI since the current Congress is useless and obsequious to the tech bros (for the most part).

unfortunately, 77 million people didn’t know BS when they saw it and voted for Trump, and at least 1/3 of voters are still supporting him.

Well done, once again, Anand! Exactly! This is truth from many angles-historical, business theory, and psychological, and spiritual! This is warning folks to please stay conscious!

Anand, Isn’t Griffin’s apologia a bit like daddy telling mischievous child

this is going to hurt me more

My mother used to say she was spanking me because she loved me. Same idea. I’m hurting you because it’s the best thing for you. It’s an inherently fucked up idea.

Poor little rich men. May they all find work that robots and A.I. will never be able to do, something human. Because surely A.I. will make them and their profiteering jobs obsolete, too. May we all live to see the day.

Wow, this hits the nail on the head!

... "I’m sad about hurting you even though I’m the one hurting you. If you push back against me, you’re really hurting yourself. There is no choice but to do it my way. You need me."

There's greenwashing and sanewashing, now, let's add to it empathywashing. This observation is right on time and profound.

The next phase of the super rich playbook is to display, warmth and compassion, to claim to be a victim (like Stephen Roth CEO Vornado realty did recently intimating that "tax the rich" is equivalent to a racial slur https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/ultra-wealthy-ceo-says-tax-205419111.html,) and soon to revive the old tactic Anand has written about extensively to use charitable giving to "whitewash" extreme wealth.

With it so hard to just get by and voices like Mamdani and others offering another way, the plutocrats are getting desperate to paint themselves as "just like us." They are not. They have accrued enormous wealth and privilege to themselves, without a concern for the water they swim in. This never ends well. There is still time to pay their fair share, chock it up to a cost of doing business and like it.

Griffin is a user. I’ve had boyfriends like that. “Sorry to have spent all your money, but….” or whatever excuse they make after they’ve harmed you.

Guess what, Kevin! All those AI centers are sucking out all the water, so your folks in Miami won’t have potable water, but there will be plenty of seawater splashing into the streets.

Can you hear the sound of tumbrels over cobblestones and scythes being sharpened? They are getting closer.

Iris Weaver's avatar

This is brilliant, thank you, Anand.

First he’s threatening to move jobs to Miami. Then he’s “sad” because all the jobs will be taken by AI. Which is it?

Doesn’t matter because it’s all a bunch of BS.

We do have a choice and AI is not inevitable. The tech-oligarchs want us to believe we must submit to their wretched vision of life. Unfortunately, many people buy into their propaganda. But what is their goal? To eliminate the need for people altogether? If we continue down this path I really don’t see any role for humans. Tech-oligarchs strike me as being people who dislike people. There could be a world in which AI is helpful, but it’s not the one the tech-oligarchs are attempting to create.

The inhumanity is deplorable.

It made me think of the ridiculous thing my grandpa supposedly said to my mom before he whipped her: "This is going to hurt me more than it hurts you." Right.
