I am offended by the email sent out by SSA. It is not accurate and I initially thought it was a scam. Since when does the SSA send out general emails congratulating legislation? My response to Commissioner Frank Bisignano: There is no reason to applaud this legislation. You are clueless if you believe your job is politicizing Social Security. It is absolutely disgusting to confuse seniors and the disabled recipients of Social Security with what constitutes little more than spam email.
Absolutely! Anyone who's living off Social Security, with almost no other income, is not subject to taxation of those benefits. If a recipient has other taxable income (and tax-exempt interest) over certain threshold amounts then up to 50% (or 85%) of the benefits will be subject to tax. BTW: This began under Reagan with Republicans including this in the 1983 Tax Act and increasing the amount taxable in later years.
I wonder if the general public realizes that the National Weather Service, NOAA and FEMA have been cut to shreds and can no longer protect us, as before. It's the age-old question. How do we get word to the general public? My weatherman talked about this on NBC. I think it's up to the weathermen. People do care about the weather, especially in coastal areas and flood, tornado and fire-prone areas. I live in a coastal area and during hurricane season I watch the NBC weatherman every day.
I don't see Elon's 3rd party going anywhere. He doesn't have a fan base and he's not a showman. No one will follow him. Even if he's right about the BBB, his only gripe is that he didn't get a financial prize out of the BBB. He doesn't care about anyone else.
Regarding the Supreme Court, I wonder if the arguments from the 3 on the left answer the 'What's in it for me" question for the other 6. They obviously haven't responded to common sense. Maybe addressing that question will make a difference.
I suspect Paramount will find out just how far it will get them to capitulate. Up to now, CBS has been the place to go for a good series, mainly because they're 'woke'. I see down the road and most of the shows CBS had that were total winners will be thumbs down by the administration. Will they fight that? They can stop capitulating after the merger, which will encourage others. In fact, anyone who has capitulated before can stop and fight in the future.
I wonder what ppl think of stronger language like our govt is sanctioning or complicit in social murder kidnapping inhumane treatment human trafficking rather than the sand ole rhetoric. It does not seem to be resonating in some places. I don’t wish to call them shites but pointed descriptions of what execrable behavior against all Rather than like no kings day bland we the ppl are not ok. Our govt is actively kidnapping making concentration camps and indulging in human trafficking. Or def of social murder. Our govt is committing social murder
The Social Security email is offensive. It is not appropriate for a government agency to send out propaganda, which is what this message is. It is untruthful and misleading. I am relatively well informed so I can apprehend its intentions, but many people are not well informed and will believe what they read. What they may not realize is that any tax cut of Social Security benefits, real or illusory, will help to decrease funding for the program. And the tax cut will not apply to all recipients, which is not clearly stated. Nothing about this effort is done with the welfare of people in mind.
When will legislators start to pay attention to truly helping to make people’s lives better? In Texas, so much effort goes into applying an antiquated, stultifying, and often cruel agenda. Many of us who live here are appalled by the various actions that damage the quality of life of so many Texans. No matter the devastation from guns, from environmental crises, from anti abortion laws, the state government continues to garner unwarranted support. The flood is one more appalling result of myopic and hate filled legislation. Still, I support Beto O’Rourke’s statewide voter registration effort, Powered by People as well as other progressive organizations in the Dallas environs to counter legislative ineptitude and demoralization.
Will this administration ever consider the destruction climate change is reaping here and globally? The world and those of us who occupy it are looking at extinction. Humans, animals, plants, forests. It's probably too late but we must embrace this as a fact
From a mentor's weekly Vison and Viewpoint - "Must the citizen ever for a moment, or in the least degree, resign his conscience to the legislator? Why has every man a conscience then? I think that we should be men first, and subjects afterward. It is not desirable to cultivate a respect for the law, so much as for the right. The only obligation which I have a right to assume is to do at any time what I think right,” wrote Henry David Thoreau, who was born in Concord, Massachusetts on this day in 1817. He is most famous for his naturalist musings from his time living in solitude at Walden Pond. But for those concerned about the present state of our democracy, his treatise, “Civil Disobedience,” is an thought-provoking read as well as a strong call to action. (There is a YouTube to listen to an audiobook version of it.)
I'd like to add a few questions to your list about our soon-to-be supercharged ICE force:
1) Who will the administration recruit to serve in a national masked ICE force -- January 6'ers and their allies, white nationalists, police and military wannabes, along with reluctant police and military assigned to serve?
2) When they have finished 'cleansing' our nation of immigrants (God help us), what will this massive and well-financed domestic army do? One thing for certain, it is not likely to be disbanded by this administration. It is much more likely to be used in ways we don't want to imagine.
3) Even if disbanded, training and structure will have been established, and relationships expanded and solidified. Is someone looking to institutionalize a right-wing, anti-democratic force to control the messy folks who actually believe in democracy and "American values"?
Checking in from where I was raised, in north Idaho. I come home every summer to care for a small family business. We fought off the “Idaho Freedom Foundation” for about three/four years…they wanted to make our impoverished public schools into church schools. We finally passed a levy (first one in 4 years, necessitated by Idaho’s draconian refusal to fully fund public education) and yet somehow? A local church was given permission to post “In God We Trust” all around our one jr. high/high school. 🤦🏼♀️ Feels like even when we win, we lose. See redoubt movement.
I rec'd that SSA email and thought it was spam-and then realized that it wasn't and that was a horrific realization. I think my first take was correct, though it was sent by the SSA-so this is the moment NOW. SMH.
PS I'm CELEBRATING Mexico's soccer win over the U.S. 👏🏾🔥🤣

Outraged by the SSA's email. Does not bode well for its future - and, obviously, for ours. Also, should we be boycotting Paramount?
