Even before reading, want to just say thank you. I first found you on Morning Joe, often serving as the wisest adult in the room. You appear fully cognizant of the uncharted water but always providing a comforting voice spitballing logical avenues to our salvation. You say”if we are smart and United we can build a better country/world that serves most not the few.”
You belong in the cohort you just spent time with. You are recognized as the new, rising voice of sanity and humanity in an evolving mediascape within a nutty, nutty world.
I cannot read or watch it all. But keep it coming. Whenever I can dip in, I am nourished.
It’s sort of like reporters are standing in front of a house on fire and just giving us an update. There’s no moral outrage over who caused it. The legacy media has lost its moral values of informing us.
Agree completely. I'm away from home and watching the local news here in what is considered a blue state in a very blue city. The normalization of Trump is on full display. Reporting the events as if we've seen all of this since the time of Lincoln. I'm not clear on how we rebuild this, if we get the opportunity. Perfect straight-faced, unemotional broadcasters not wanting to make waves. Not even one incredulous "Wow" at some of the sickness from Trump, Miller and this administration.
That said, we have no real numbers or data that tell us how many, like those of us here, are getting our news and information from Substack and other alternative platforms. Still not sure it comes close to what Fox and the right have in the way of dominating the airwaves, but if there is steady flow to this, especially on the left and center, then I will reserve judgement and have hope.
It is going to report, work with an editorial board, look to best practices in finding and in identifying evidence. Archived articles can help, but access is limited to those who have already written the material for publication. Write fearlessly.
Loved this so much. So much wisdom here. I think that if Americans are shown verbatim what Trump says, followed up by the objective truth pointed out by thorough and true reporting, they can't continue to ignore the absolute disaster that Trump is
First, the shiny object Trump threw out there of him as pope could easily have been skipped by 95% of media. He is a troll.🧌 As is all his social media staff.
There is a vast hole in the reporting that seems to only be filled by Propublica. How are these insane violations of our constitution and power grabs from Congress impacting town investment projects, homelessness shelters, food banks, schools, infrastructure investments, etc.
MAGA is diverting billions and they never ran their campaigns on defunding; the NIH, or the CDC, or dismantling FEMA, or removing food inspection, Americorps, or Institute of Peace, or flood protection via USGS or National Weather Service. And they lied outright about Project 2025 and removing funding for libraries, museums, and PBS.
There is no one bringing these impacts home by reporters. And that also includes the D politicians. The public is wandering around knowing their lives will be impacted, but they do not know that when you remove funds from nonprofits to house and feed homeless the numbers will explode from the 800,000 we already have. Or how the 3-5 million homes we are short causing inflationary housing costs, he is making it all worse with his economic tariff stupidity.
Gumshoe journalism for local impacts (and politicians to interview their constituents) and businesses of consequences of austerity. Because the population still believes these morons that austerity + trickle down + taking medicine improves an economy. Even though it has been thoroughly disproven. Interview Mark Blyth.
I see, hear, and agree with you. Thanks for expressing the real truth. This is what we need to hear for people to then understand what the cost to them is going to be.
The public needs the truths that are hard to tell as they come at a cost to the messenger/publication; hard to hear as these truths demand a reorientation of ideologies sometimes carried with religious fervor , cultural commitments to ways of living that are now irrational reflections of a reckless era; and self-reflection concerning core values which raised the ofttimes painful question Of the relationship between the individual and the public good. The demeanor & essence of this empire is shattered and in its place is a frightening array of possibilities from autocracy to fascism... the only relief will come when the public demands real accountability and decides to demand democratization. Without compromise, decency without moral equivocation and love replacing hatred.
I just sat and listened to and took notes on the Sir Harry Evans Summit on Journalism that you have a link to. I believe you, Anand, have your finger on the pulse of the American populi. I am an old granny in a small town and I am seeing the breakdown of our fragile democracy that is being done on a day-to-day basis. ICE is grabbing people off the streets without warrants. The rule of law is being ignored and I am so very troubled by what I see. We see the buffoonery and we are left looking for strong leadership that will fight this poison that is dripping on us one drop at a time. Protesting is now the power that is being presented to all of us and I am urging you to please lead people in this direction. The mainstream media are not trusted, this is unfortunate. Their intelligence is not getting to the heart of the discontent and fear that the collective people I know, are experiencing. A clarion call by a trusted soul is the hope I am clinging to, whether it is your voice, Heather Cox Richardson's voice or any of the other journalists that are sharing via substacks and podcasts. The large outlets give us the important headlines, Rachael Maddow is a great source, but you Anand, give us the explanation and at times an answer to what we need to hear. Keep doing the good work that you do. Now more than ever we need leaders and you are, in my opinion, one of the best. Be strong, be well. With gratitude I thank you.
This was so informative. You were a very important part of this panel. Will you have processing session with your subscribers to review your experience and your takeaways?
I loved the video of the panel. I hope that as you all report 47 you keep the truth up front and emphasize the effect of all his departments on ordinary people. Appreciate your thoughtfulness in reporting.
The points you made about framing stories and creating substantive meaning, and educating people on what Reporters actually do, were spot on.
How powerful (your) humor can be in providing a touchstone and a respite for people, allowing them to relax and perhaps focus more deeply on what of import, follows.
Thanks, Anand for You Tube of the conclave (the other one). Most memorable two words. “Meaning Making” stuck, although you and others have used many times. I’m going to do a deep dive into the “What, who, where, when and why” of meaning making. Don’t have your skills. Maybe there’s in book in there. Thanks for all the questions you raise.
What a challenging time to be a part of media & journalism. Your panel discussion was fascinating. Each of you from a unique sect. I do feel like Substack offers explanations around current happenings. Your newsletter, in particular & to me, has a broader range of not only meaning-making but also meaning-seeking, which ultimately roots itself in radical acceptance. Thank you.
My mom and I watched the panel and found it so fascinating. I thank you Anand for sharing! Your insight about meaning-making and the limitations of Substack were straight from the conversations I've had with friends that have migrated to Substack.
It was also great to hear from Reuters, NYT, and CNN and their take on where we are at and where to go from here.
The Ink is a staple of my viewing/reading - thank you again.
I liked your final comment on showing how journalism is done. It would be interesting to have some cross-pollination between the legacy media and the independent media. This has happened as some journalists have been dismissed or elected to leave the organizations where they worked. But I wonder if more of this sharing could be developed between the news investigators and the news meaning-makers.

The media report what trump’s regime does but they treat it like it’s normal. There isn’t enough outrage. He is destroying our country!!!

Watched every minute of this great meeting. Important discussion. Good questions. 👏🇺🇸

Bravo, Anand! 🤍
