Do not normalize the batshit crazy. If you listened to Trump’s speech to the military you must know he is deranged. We are being led by a wildly irrational person, backed up by an anti-democratic corps of fascists. Do not humor these people! Call them out at every turn! Turn up the volume! Turn up the heat! If you’re concerned with decorum, process and your safety, keep it civil, but speak truth to power! They are the power, but they are weak people. 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽

I’m thinking we Dems and half of independents need to keep in mind what is important — health care of course. And free speech, respect for military, respect for leaders of other nations, respect for autonomy of other nations, respect for reading books and education, respect for decency for people who arrived here from other countries and the reasons they took that risk. I’m also thinking we are out of practice for countering the attacks on democracy that have accelerated during the past 9 months. When the question ‘what can I/we do?’ surfaces, rally’s, marches, voting, and self-care for the long haul are the answers. This is an in-your-face administration. It’s unrelenting.

The message I’m picking up from ASO is that we too must be unrelenting. I also recognize that I, along with the community of Dems I’m locally part of, lack the “push” needed to stand up to this admin with the same force we are experiencing. Last night I heard AOC articulate her position. I-we need her clarity. I-we need the sort of mentoring she received.

In spite of following Anand, ASO, and other fine people, I feel edges of loneliness and isolation. I want those feelings to stop. I want to feel effective in opposing the systematic threat coming from the Trump admin.

We need to say out loud that we are fighting authoritarianism. Healthcare is relatable & very important but it's only a part. If we continue to focus on the parts, it appears as though we don't see the bigger picture or that we see it but are afraid to speak to it. I'd rather us exchange our current state of being terrified by what each day brings from this administration to a state where we are terrified to speak out but do it anyway.

Yes yes yes to ASO's wise and dead-on assessment. It's an existential threat from people unwilling to negotiate. Full stop.

I love the conversation and Anat is the bomb, but it feels like this moment is more about doing as much talking as possible as opposed to getting the right message. They should not be mutually exclusive but … the mental exercise of getting the right message seems to stop Dems (and other smart people) in their tracks and they pause and back away from doing everything they possibly can to just say something. Perfect being the enemy of the good (or whatever the saying is). I would be happy if more of them went on Fox, manophere podcasts and said anything at all. They really can’t lose - trump is a crook, a sex offender, a useful idiot for authoritarian bastards, - choose any and all and say it say it say it.

In support of ASO’s argument, see Jason Stanley’s post last night, “There are massive incentives to downplay the problem and little incentive to tell the truth:” https://substack.com/@jasonintrator/note/p-175060816?r=3prmzw&utm_medium=ios&utm_source=notes-share-action

“Police” are repelling down helicopters to arrest and detain people in the middle of the night. Time to ring the “existential threat” alarms.

First, even if you have to crawl out of your hospital bed in defiance of the wishes of the doctors and your family, go to the nearest No Kings demonstration on October 18. Trump and his obersturmbannführer Miller are hoping that the post Charlie Kirk canonization and their warnings that they are coming for dissenters will intimidate us. Disappoint them. Second, the resistance to ICE being shown in Chicago is nothing short of heroic and should be replicated in every city our gangster regime is targetting. Chicago is a tough town as they are coming to appreciate.

This messaging sounds muddled to me. It is not clear, crisp nor persuasive. Indivisible has the best I’ve seen. Call it what it is: the TRUMP SHUTDOWN.

Trump and the GOP are ripping away healthcare from millions of Americans while funding authoritarian actions against the American people, including militarizing our communities. Democrats are fighting FOR YOU against Trump’s attacks on working families, our economy, and our democracy, and will not support a cruel budget that harms everyday Americans.

Haven’t we seen enough everyday people, not-engaged people showing us that affordability is the thing that most concerns them? Why wouldn’t we lead with that, and on healthcare, if all things? Once we have everyone’s attention, then we can embellish with the fact that healthcare is being made unaffordable in order to partially offset billionaire tax cuts, that we are bailing out a hedge fund buddy of Bessent’s with $20 billion to Argentina (which happens to be exporting grain to China, sorry American farmers).

I agree with many others that while issues can be included, the main message should be to not fund authoritarianism or fascism. I think the American people by and large understand these terms and progressive leaders need to stop shying away from making direct attacks against Trump and his despicable, corrupt, and sycophantic cohorts.

Issues can be part of a message, but the primary message should be "we will not fund authoritarians and the destruction of our Constitutional form of government and rights."
