You CAN quit Amazon. Our family did it with very little effort. We order from other retailers, or directly from the manufacturer. Sometimes…we even get in the car to go to a store 🤣. No Whole Foods ever is SUPER easy. #onward

Yep. Time to drop Amazon too!

Quit all things Amazon after Bezos pulled the endorsement for Kamala Harris!

No Amazon

No Whole Foods

No Kindle

No Prime

No PayPal

No Audible

No Zappos

I’m sure there are more but that was my cleanse since November ’24.

Yes, years ago we shifted to Costco - they offer a website and delivery that has a lot of the things we bought from Amazon. And we buy direct from companies vs using the middleman (middleperson?) of Amazon. Bonus - Costco is still engaged in DEI efforts and gets good marks on how they treat workers (in coverage I've seen, haven't talked to workers directly) Amazon is awful to their workers, at least the non-robot workers.

So did we, back in 2019. We were able to make it through Covid without ordering from them, and haven't looked back. It CAN be done!

Not if you're a health food nut and Whole Foods is just down the street. I would love to say it's easy but it isn't.

I hate Amazon but shop at Whole Foods. No longer. I just can’t put more money in his pocket.

Or you just like to get ripped off. Maybe you live in a health food dessert, but I have 2 great food stores near me, another small supermarket with plenty of organic, healthy, gf opions, and even my Shop Rite chain has a ton of products - Bob's red mill, etc, all a whole lot less expensive than Whole Foods. Personally, I hate Whole Food's. The store is too big, and way too expensive, other than a few items, like banana's.

sounds like a great location. Where is it? I'm in LA as a renter - longtime, but at some point I'll have to go elsewhere.

My guess is that he isn’t obeying in advance. He’s being exactly who he always was.

Money can change people for the worse---Machiavelli.

You are letting him off the hook. His idea in creating Amazon was to take a piece of every transaction. It's non-productive, parasitic behavior. I suspect he was born a sociopath.

As I Commented last night somewhere "Lord Acton famously said in the 1800's: 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' because he believed that when someone has unchecked power, with no limitations or accountability, they are more likely to abuse that power and engage in corrupt behavior, ultimately harming the people they are supposed to serve; essentially arguing that the more power one has, the greater the potential for moral decay and misuse of authority."

Some seek out that power and most don't.

I also wrote to the Post and told them WHY I canceled.

Expand full comment

There was a multiple choice when canceling and I chose problems with content. They're having an avalanche of cancelations today, I think they know exactly why every one of today's cancelation is happening. Beyond not wanting Bezos to have my money, I don't want to read a paper with that slant anyway.

I canceled a few months ago but tempted to re-subscribe and cancel again.

I cancelled my subscription after Bezos refused to print the editorial board's endorsement of Harris/Walz.

I was in my early twenties when, under honorable leadership, the Post's Woodward & Bernstein exposed Nixon and his cabal for the criminals they were.

My generation enjoyed decades of loyalty to WaPo. Seeing the wreckage Bezos is making of a once great newspaper has been agonizing.

This "memo", Bezos taking the knee to Trump, fascism, corruption, and unbridled capitalist greed, proves we are correct in condemning--and abandoning-- the Washington post.

"Taking a knee" implies that he's on the opposite team from them. He's on the same damn team as them and always has been.

He's ON HIS KNEES.

Bezos and the rest of the billionaires in this country and probably elsewhere are all part of the coup!

Not a subscriber but I cancelled my Amazon Prime membership.

I know Amazon is incredibly convenient but the things I buy there I can find elsewhere if I look hard enough (e.g. beyond sponsored search engine results). Buy local where you can. It definitely is more expensive but worth it to me to avoid supporting his business. Everyone has to make their own call and I’ve made mine.

And what do you plan to do as an alternative? I have multiple subscriptions for vitamins, food, even ac filters. I want to cancel but I would probably end up buying many of the same things at Whole Foods for more money.

Whole Foods was acquired by Amazon aka Bezos, years ago.

We use Costco (they deliver) locally owned grocery store, locally owned hardware store, and we are buying very little; gas, groceries and household necessities.

Expand full comment

Yes, I know...I've gone to Whole Foods for decades. It's just not that easy to give it up. We have a Natural Grocers, but pretty far away. There just is no real competition, and the WF is close. Yet, I'm considering boycotting...I'm also considering leaving Facebook, though I rarely use it except to keep in touch with friends.

Everyone should do what they can. If you’re constrained by where you live, by finances, by other factors (maybe you work for Amazon and you can’t get out of its tentacles) then no guilt. You do what you can.

You are wrong, Anand, I'm sorry to say. Bezos didn't "obey in advance." Bezos and Theil and Musk are driving this train. They are acolytes of Curtis Yarvin and they want to destroy democracy and install a CEO to run the country. Bezos is simply a part of a tech bro fever dream for taking over the country and it's about time we recognized it.

Done and this time for good. HCR, R Hubbell, all of my Substack subscriptions and meidas, BBC are getting my support. Urge those leaving move support to scholars, journalists and authors who are standing up to fascist take over of what used to be generally responsible media.

I recently canceled my WAPO subscription. I felt it was necessary as the paper lost its way. It can no longer be trusted to protect democracy.

What a load of crap. Does he think he's fooling anyone? He's stating that this will now be a state-run publication.

The freedom of the press is one of the cornerstones of a free and democratic society—a bulwark against tyranny and a stanchion of truth and accountability. It ensures that power is scrutinized, voices are heard, and the public remains informed, fostering an engaged and empowered citizenry. Without it, democracy weakens, leaving room for misinformation, oppression, and unchecked authority.

This is such a dark time in America. And, why I'm convinced more than ever that we need to address these bullies with quiet resistance that goes over their heads (Army choir singing Les Mis at Governor's Ball), calling out their behavior (Chris Murphy), but also a lot of kick-em-in-the balls energy (like Jasmine Crockett). This time calls for us to go on the attack whenever and however we need.

Feeling pretty tired these days. I hope that the Post loses even more subscriptions. Bezos is a disgusting human being, a little dictator in his own fiefdom. That doesn't resemble freedom of the Press whatsoever.

I'm already a member here, and very thankful to be one!

Thanks for the post. It was easy to cancel. WaPo has been doing a piss poor job of naming the threats to democracy and constitutional violations anyway. I guess they’ll soon become a propaganda arm of Trump and Musk
