Be not afraid
Be part of a new media and a new story of America
Today in Brooklyn, I ran into the extraordinary Letitia James, attorney general of the State of New York, a woman who surely is one reason Donald Trump rarely sleeps.
She was dancing in the sunlight outside a church, her usual spot at the marathon. I pointed her out to my kids. They already knew her story. They already know the example she gives of how to stand up to bullies. And there she was, exhibiting it — by standing on her home turf, basking in the sunlight, dancing, cheering others on.
Look at that picture of us together. Look closely at her face. I cannot find fear in it. There might be fear somewhere in there, but I cannot find it. She didn’t dance like she was afraid. She didn’t chat with us for a few minutes like she was afraid. She wasn’t hiding out. She was standing on her ground and being freedom, not just speaking of it.
Fear is contagious. So is the opposite of fear. And one of the mantras of The Ink in these times is that we are going to keep it real, but we are never going to stoop to fear.
Courage, too, is contagious. Truth is contagious. Curiosity is contagious. So is openness to others and a willingness to look within. We will keep practicing those values, fearlessly, and we hope you’re with us.
