WEEKEND READS: Which way, America?
The best writing and thinking for January 10, 2025
Happy Saturday, Ink readers!
It has been an overwhelming week, but as we do each weekend, we’ve collected some of the most interesting writing and thinking we’ve found to explain, inform, and expand our understanding of the current moment. We’ve brought together intriguing thinking on the anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol; what’s happened and is happening now in Venezuela, in Minneapolis, and in Iran; how we understand (and misunderstand) ourselves and our world; how language is changing (and changing us); and more.
Welcome to today’s edition of Weekend Reads. We invite you to read along with us.
You won’t want to miss any of it. Thank you so much to our supporting subscribers for making this newsletter possible. If you haven’t yet joined our community, why not become part of this and help us build the future of independent media today?
Blaming the victims
I think one should unconditionally condemn the kidnapping of Maduro and his wife along with the economic and social background that accompanies this act. It revives the darkest criminal past of Western colonialism, and, to add insult to injury, it does this under the guise of supporting democracy. So, to paraphrase Stalin for the nth time, one should avoid any relativization or comparison here: The answer to the question “Which is worse, Trump or Maduro?” is: both are worse. [Barn Raiser]
