It’s the first long weekend of 2024, and we’re thinking about what it means to enter another critical year for democracy.

While we’ll be spending a lot of time this year looking at democracy here in America, an unprecedented number of people worldwide are set to pick their elected representatives this year, kicking off with Taiwan’s general election today, in which Lai Ching-te, the vice president who has sought greater distance from Beijing, appears to have prevailed.
