Unionizing the Ivy League
Harvard faculty and the Dartmouth basketball team are organizing — what about your workplace?
It’s pretty clear that college sports are big business and players are employees (that’s according to the NLRB), so the latest news from the labor movement renaissance shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise: Dartmouth’s mens basketball team has voted to unionize — the first ever NCAA team to do so.
They’re joined in the struggle by their brothers and sisters on the Harvard faculty, where 3,000 non-tenure-track teachers filed this week for recognition.
These efforts are just beginning, but they remind us of what the journalist and activist Kim Kelly had to tell us: You should join a union. Yes, you!
