Very clear & accessible interview. You are really good at this, Anand . For another deep dive for anyone interested in law today, yesterday Marc Elias had a Substack Live with Anthony Romero of the ACLU. Illuminating. Also available at the Democracy Docket youtube channel. Hopeful & inspiring.
Attorney Matthew Wollin: "Seek out things that help you envision a better world — and not just live in this kind of chaos reaction, fear-based news cycle."
So capitulating not only lost business but they ponied up a ton of free work for a dictator. Sounds exactly what any smart lawyer WOULD NOT DO. Clearly it is hard to understand. But as I have observed the ability to rationalize has no limit.
Grateful for the introduction to Matthew. It was helpful to read his answer to your question about the Supreme Court. SCOTUS has been one of the scariest aspects of what is currently happening, recognizing the power of individual states is a great reminder of a means to combat some of the nonsense coming out of the trump administration.
Very interesting session. I like how direct your questions are and how direct the lawyer's answers are. Not a lot of weaving and bobbing on a complex issue.
We are cetainley living through the proof of this: "you’re basically asking a bunch of ornery conservative uncles to rule on things that make them uncomfortable. That rarely ends well."
Law firms that have capitulated to Trump have chosen personal wealth over defending democracy. So what if they go out of business doing the right thing? Trump is forcing everyone out of business—NPR, PBS, lifesaving non profits, weather alerts, et al. Greedy cowards. What a species we are.
Love this interview, Anand. We definitely need more lawyers with the perspective of Matthew Wollin. It's too bad that he is no longer practicing law...but perhaps his efforts to explain the law will help more people understand its complexities. It is truly troubling that so many large, important law firms have capitulated to the regime. But it is also encouraging to know that the ones that haven't capitulated are winning their suits against it.

What an excellent interview! And thank you for introducing us to Matthew, he has a fascinating perspective to offer.
thought this interview truly explained the situation. Lawyers need to protect and serve the people not just one narcissistic and vengeful group.

I'm glad I read this. It gives me a sliver of hope.

Love his not totally lost idealism. I agree, the Supreme Court is not going to save us. Gonna look at his Substack.
thanks!
Great interview. Thanks, Anand.
