The ideas expressed in your essay have been rolling around in my head recently, but I couldn't form them into a coherent shape. Then I read your article. It blew me away in its exact perfection. I really hope this 'fake masculinity' is on its death rattle, for all our sakes. Speak it!
Anand has nailed the horror created by the weak mess of a man squatting in the White House. The best summary of the fraudulent evil clown who has driven America into a ditch that I have read.
Everyone wants to enjoy social benefits, including Trump. Nobody wants to pay for them. Obviously, that includes Trump! So that's not the worst of it.
Oddly, he and his followers think no one should benefit from social programs (bankruptcy law, tax law, minimal social health structures, etc.). Again oddly, they, his followers, not him, are evidently the only ones paying into them. So much so, they take pride in their master's exploitation of social programs. At least one person they believe in, should get something out the system, right?
They also defend his authority to disrupt individual independence. They are entertained by the bitch'in and complain'in when he encroaches upon each citizen's Right of independent choice, as long as their independence isn't being infringed, like wearing a simple mask. That's the worst of it.
Your independence to decide what is your best interest, isn't your best interest as decided by the authoritarian's 'power and position' to dictate your best interest. It is a subjugation to an altogether twisted hypocritical right wing extremist mentality. The problem isn't right wing. The problem is the severest extreme of shameless hypocrisy.
Brilliant and beautifully written. Trump will continue his vicious cycle of selfishness, ignorance and weakness and will eventually dig his own grave that will be proven on Nov 3rd.
Saw you for the first time tonight on Laurence O’Donnell’s show, and knew right away your newsletter would offer astute critique.
I’ll teach this one tomorrow in my Writing for Social Change seminar, as we’re examining the far-reaching effects of a certain kind of broken, panicked masculinity.
Gratitude. (Will sign up for a paid membership when we’re able.)
I first listened to you on Morning Joe, and immediately thought what a breath of fresh air. You still are, and this piece just magnified that. The best of everything to you.
Thank you for connecting the threads. Right-wing government wants to own women's bodies and dictate our children's futures but don't wish to help care for our bodies or plan positively for our children's futures. Trump enjoys the best medical care available without contributing. "Bikers for Trump" got to roar around in a super-spreading event that is estimated to have cost tax-payers billions of dollars in COVID medical care. The right wing's perceived "rights" infringe on everyone's freedom and the fallout becomes our collective disaster. Trump's COVID diagnosis has helped to tear down the curtain of their hypocrisy.
I cannot tell you how much I identified with everything that Anand said. I could not believe what a wise summing up he made of where we are today. That one sentence summed up what Trump is doing and why it is so sad and awful and dangerous.
“He hosted a super-spreader event to honor a justice who would have the government control your body but refuse the duty to care for it, and when the virus he helped go around came around, he availed of the healthcare he would deny others, financed by the taxes he refuses to pay.” So said Anand. Wow, that was clear and concise.
I am so happy I found this newsletter and I plan to support it. We need our journalists and writers who are willing to write their truth and not pander to those who carry the power. We need accountability and those willing to call for it. I only pray that we hear the message loud and clear and seek the much-needed change this country requires to remain a democracy.
Anand, I’ve seen you on telly before but like a typical procrastinator I always thought I’d google you “manana”! Tonight I was watching my hombre Lawrence O’Donell aka Sir. Lawrence as I refer to him as. Tonight I paid attention to what you said and all that squeaked out of me was “Wow”! Only you could say it the way you have. You Sir, are commended for giving voice to my thoughts. Thoughts that I never put in words. Thank you, thank you, thank you for being the voice of America!
This man, who "plays" the part of a president knows no more of governing a country than a rabid dog. He is the virus and the virus is him.
Anand describes him and his tactics succinctly.
I truly love the emotional intelligence of your writing and perspective -- it is the heart lens we need to learn to do it differently.

Such a brilliant article filled with provocative but point on insights.
As I read this, I kept saying out loud "Yes!" repestedly. Gratitude for writing this. Seriously.

A brilliant analysis. Thank you.

We can only hope these are death throes...
Desperate generational adherence to such primordial expressions of manhood speaks of the self knowledge void: what a battlefield.
Brilliant! Thank you for writing this insightful piece and thank you to Lawrence O’Donnell for bringing this to my attention.
