We in KANSAS prevailed and have at last been noticed for the committed activists we are! No more just a "fly over" state. Personally I have been a fighter since protesting the Vietnam war in high school! I have worked hard to be part of a blue wave, knowing I will not see our country back on track in my lifetime BUT it is a beginning!!!
Only because election results are as they are can I say that perhaps MAGA did our country a favor. For too long Democrats have been asleep at the wheel over the deteriorating economic conditions for our middle and working classes. The Trump nightmare has awoken what should have been there all along — the dire need to provide all Americans the chance to pursue and achieve the dream. I humbly suggest that reinstating a progressive income tax should be the first order of business. Followed by some form of Medicare for all, ending the war in Iran, and fixing the tariffs. Hold off on punishing corruption until the people once again feel the government cares about them.
I am immensely relieved but also wondering how this will now play out. How will we make changes that are substantial and make lives better for everyone?
“Orchestra”- great metaphor. Everyone playing their selected instruments.
I’m wondering how we’ll be able to move Jeffries and Schumer to lead on what folks most need and voted- in faith- to put into motion. I’m really pessimistic about either man’s capabilities and desire to actually re-build and lead. Do we have to camp out and scream—at their offices and homes some more?
Yes to this as a pivotal moment, as yet undefined. I’d like to see you weave in the influence of the international cabal (Putin-led) / tech broligarchy through which we are being played. This is all happening on levels seen and unseen.
Agreed. What can Dems actually accomplish with Trump still at the helm? Ending the war and removing most of the tariffs will help with the cost of living, but those are no easy feats. Hopefully they can tamp down ICE, but make no mistake, the majority of Americans don't want open borders. They can go after Trump and officials for corruption and ignoring the rule of law but I'm not sure that is on the radar of most Americans. They can probably restore the cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. But they only have two years to produce results before the pendulum swings the other direction. Then there is health care and AI and data centers. A lot to deal with.
"The emotion that swept them back to power is the one that once uplifted Trump: the sense that nothing one had tried was working, so try something else." Partially -- I think their actual sense was "nothing is working, let's try vilifying an 'out' group." And, wow, I assume that's not what's happening here -- you gotta appreciate Talarico's statement on his podium last night: "Love Thy Neighbor."
Here in Texas I am encouraged by the turnout and optimistic (cautiously). We have much work to do.

I love the idea of a humanist renaissance.
Humanist renaissance is a concept that resonates

Right you are. As RuPaul might beseech: "Don't f%#k it up!"
Now to get to work on January 🙂
We need our elected officials to elect new leaders in the House and Senate.
Thanks! Your thoughts put into writing are mine today. Yes we must take this win & use it to reestablish wealth balance & restore the rights of all
Great essay!

So true. Separation is not.good. Rejecting another human being is not good. We can do better.
For all the bluster in the 2024 election to "drain the swamp" i am grateful for the swamp creatures who self identified and will now be expunged.
