Yes empathy and compassion scare both Musk and POTUS. They are both so addicted to power and greed they have no idea how to practice leadership based on mutual trust and cooperation.
Reading On Freedom with my Democrats Abroad book club. We just finished reading Freedom's Dominion by Jefferson Cowie. They are each talking about different concepts of freedom. Cowie talks about the freedom of those who are above others as they see themselves having the freedom to do what they want, and that includes having ownership or dominion over others. What a lot of White men want to return the US to being. Cowie makes a case for enlightened populism.
Snyder is talking about 5 forms of freedom, sovereignty, unpredictability, mobility, factuality, solidarity and ties them to different stages of our lives. I don't think one would connect these words with freedom if one did not read this book. Still, he is making a compelling case that "freedom to," is freedom, not "freedom from" and that freedom has goodness of action in it.
We have just started the book and will be discussing the first 2 chapters this week. The book also tells us that having good government allows children to grow up free, and that is important. We have to understand what good government is in order to have it. Much of what the US has in the way of government I have not felt was good. Too much markets, not enough humanity. Maybe this is a time to switch that as Trump destroys the markets, out of their ashes can rise the people.
What has to happen to a person to lead them to believe that empathy is a trap? The statement seems to reflect a human being who has purposefully shut down their humanity. How much pain would it take?
Robeson was a magnificent singer forced to evade the cruel restrictions of racism by making his career in Europe, as did many wrong-skinned American artists.
I would look to the elders of the Civil Rights Movement, to Jewish-American history for both insight and guidance today. The more one learns about the past the better one responds. There are also leaders who represent other faith communities who are usually silenced. To hear from those who never thought it was “Giuliani time,” would be a treat.
All of this matters, that Bernie is getting a serious message out - a warning and call to action. It matters that well known highly respected artists come and support the call to action. The message delivered in person cuts through. 📢
This song has an incredible new meaning to me now. Thanks for bringing these historic events to light! On Sunday I was pleased to learn of Bernie’s appearances before such large crowds and watched several clips of this Neil Young performance of Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World at the LA rally. https://www.youtube.com/live/mU_GhbFH2Gw?si=63KqLsBo-_BXir3N&t=4h19m48s
I couldn’t get enough of the feeling it evoked. 💜 He opened with this song when I last saw him in concert and that was terrific - but it had so much more meaning that he showed up and joined the fight. This man has empathy!
Sidenote about Neil: Even as a genX I appreciate his art. ✊He is a true resister, and I suspect because of his empathy. He took his music off of Spotify over the big Joe Rogan contract a few years ago. That is when some quit Spotify, and I switched to Tidal.
What a pleasure to see Neil Young and hear his scratchy, noble voice reaching across the spectrum of people there in LA. Thank you Amand for bringing some joy into my night after watching the monster in the WH embracing the monster from El Salvador about building more torture chambers for American citizens sent there.

I was having problems with the 50501 calendar yesterday, but I thought it was just me. Thanks for the information!
