Anand — I have read your earlier work and used it in my graduate-level classes on social impact and philanthropy. It is always thoughtful and compelling. I have been thoroughly enjoying the discussion of this new book on Morning Joe. My copy comes this week and I look forward to digging into it. Thank you so much for the work you do and the perspectives you bring to us.

Fellow Inksters, my preordered copy arrived and I dived right in. It's really good. Will we have an opportunity to discuss this book as a community (perhaps on multiple occasions)? Also, I don't know if this has been posted elsewhere, so just in case here's a long form interview with Anand that was on All of It (WNYC radio): https://wnyc.org/browse/shows/episode/simplecast/be8a8362-1fc6-424a-bc0f-ebc16811c4f6

Hello Anand, I just listened to your interview with Tina Brown! Congratulations!!! I am so grateful I paid to listen to it. I'm on the "humanizing train"! I hope you get to be with your family and friends to celebrate for weeks and months!

I received my book yesterday and I began reading it immediately. With many interruptions of life, I had to put it down.

I have a letter I wrote to you the other day that I would like to send through snail mail, it was a spontaneous, "I have to write this to Anand this moment". If it is okay, will you send me a PO box number where I can send this letter to you? Thanks for your inspiration!

When I was a kid, am now almost 80, my mother would cycle through manic depressive episodes and at that time the treatment wasn't that helpful. She seemed to have to go through the cycle repeatedly . Her behavior was often very loud and bizarre. She had a family who cared for her a state mental hospital system . It was extremely difficult for my dad and all of us. I know that families on the edge can give up and all but abandon a member who is out of control and there are no supports. I can see so clearly how this tragic episode can happen.

Anand, as i'm a nightowl in Oregon, i happened to catch you this morning for MJ day 2, hadn't known you were on yesterday and appreciate that i can catch it on your inclusion of it to see ...

... Working on my own writing deadline and unpredictable if i'll manage to catch tomorrow's - Will it be at the same (i think it was) 7 am EST timing??

But i'm writing to say, it was exceptional ...And until one Joe-ruption (minimal by his standards and you folded that topic-twist in well but i always then wonder what you were about to say (on subway as microcosm) before he made it a historical Q (and, per his question, i spent 1978 living in NYC, which i do repeatedly hear referred to as NYT's worst era (and '78 itself was what NewYorkers themselves decried as a 3-blizzard winter instead of the usual two - and a garbage strike co-occurring with the 3rd one meant garbage out for pickup, under snow for a long while gave the whole city an atypical 'strench upon meltdown), but i rode the subway constantly, living on Broome St. (subletting a loft for $200 a month if you can imagine--there was that advantage to the era - rents were cheap) ... and never felt unsafe but i sure could relate to your wording about "every other car having a person in trouble" (i think that was your wording and i found it especially well said) ... if only people could look at such encounters in that way instead of going to instantly feeling threatened ...

you had an atypical stretch of time to make a very cohesive segue of thematic points ... and Jeh was a unexpectedly perfect adjunct to your story with his own implicitly alluded-to role (oh to have someone like him back in the government) with the example of a Guatemalan woman and child at the border, probably straight from one of his border encounters and feeding the theme of humanization-dehumanization ...

I've decried for ten years, among all the things to decry, all the criminal "in-chief" roles our misanthrope-in-chief walks and talks through, it's dehumanizer-in-chief that is arguably THE worst for our nation's sake ... as he models and promotes the socialization of dehumanizer worldview notably among young entitled males but not limited by any means to males or to youth ... Heaven help us if there's not a comeuppance on Nov. 3 ... They say even Scott Colom (was it Jeh or someone else i heard last night commenting on what a gifted candidate he is) has a chance to turn Mississippi into a new blue shade ... i think there's never been a Democrat statewide there since Democrats were also segregationists ...

And "dehumanizer" is the most chilling trait he-in-chief has with all his idolized tyrants, what most makes him think they're his "club" is the racism/ethnicism ... I may have mentioned before years back on your site the research by Kteily and Bruneau (2017) on dehumanization with cross-cultural examinations of how dehumanizing (ethnic) groups are of their prime enemy group(s) ... I was stopped in my tracks upon first seeing that among all these studied comparison groups ... using the Scale of Man five-figure evolution from monkey to man and asking subjects to rate where they saw their enemy on the scale, the absolute bottom of the list, the most dehumanizing of all was Israelis toward Palestinians, EVEN LOWER than Americans rating of ISIS ... an entire ethnicity seen as less human than a group of beheading terrorists ... A chilling "explanation" for what the dominant cultural vibe is that has kept electing BIbi ... Not to overgeneralize based on selected studies but results like that alas match realities on the ground and imho fully accounted for Gaza ... those soldiers, some now interviewed in NAZA, which i haven't seen yet, surely telling stories that exemplify that very dehumanizing driver hellbent on self-righteous annihilation ... We can't self-rightify either - which was another thing i was so impressed by in your remarks this morning ... your examples from your friend (evidence of a great mutually self-aware confident friendship) that he would alert you to your own "slippages" into this desocializing vibe of the past ten years ...

People (pundits et al) never bring up what i recall so vividly as to how dehumanizer-in-chief planted his hook in his 2015 rally crowds... his evil genius knew to lock in on "political correctness" that got his young males especially shouting agreement as he "allied" with their own worst instincts to claim the "right" to label other people any way (the worst way) they wanted .. and i hear that to this day coming up as a defiance of anyone calling out their untenable rudeness ... and that was another aspect of in-chief's (fraudster-in-chief, auctioneer-in-chief etc) sly 'hooking' ... was redefining words to even dehumanize words, detach them so they served his us-vs-themism ... turning a civilizing intent to respect people's desire to be - if labels must exist - to be labeled in their own self-determining way - to reframe/redefine that from a desire not to be rude into "oppression of white males" ...

goodness, i didn't see this stream of consciousness coming and (too typical) getting myself derailed from my own writing project, so back i go ... but with such great appreciation - oh, i never wound up saying: i actually rewound you this morning and reheard the whole segment a second time ... that's how much i appreciated it .. i almost never do that ...

blessings ... from Oregon ...

I said Scale of Man when i meant "Ascent of Man" and i meant to link the study as well but realize now i don't recall how i got access to it ... The title of the article is "Darker Demons of Our Nature: The Need to (Re)Focus Attention on Blatant Forms of Dehumanization"

if it's hard to access, you might try emailing the author at

n-kteily@kellogg.northwestern.edu although he may have moved universities by now ... I say all this because i think you'd find this research, Anand, very central to this one (of interweaving) themes on your plate with this new book you've birthed ,..
