Speaking of woke, Trump should have stayed awake in economics and history classes. Clearly he did not take any Government classes. Still want to see those transcripts and the bank account entries for someone working in UPenn admissions.
this was a very interesting analysis of how the elite colleges are grappling with the problems that DEI poses. What I find is that there is no explanation or definition of what DEI was meant to represent. That everyone has a chance to compete - not just one population - this seems like a cloaking of the real cause - to dumb down the population and only have the safest beliefs represented. What have we conceded to as far as pursuing academic freedom.
I recommend you make sure your child is fluent in several languages in countries that are much less likely to change their education systems in an anti-democratic direction. Look at Iceland. Your child can go there free if s/he can speak the language. So, find your Icelandic program. I would say the same of many countries. However, that is so far ahead it is hard to plan for.
In the meantime, I thought Harvard was caving to the Trump administration in order to save/rescue their research funding.
I find Francie Diep's soft pedaling of what has taken place disappointing as the topic required a more honest recounting of just how awful it is to see our legacy institutions cave in to a dictator.
Hamilton Nolan has an excellent essay in his Substack “How Things Work” (no paywall) about Brown University’s settlement. He explains in detail the hypocrisy and dangers in the settlement. Well worth reading. “Unsuccessfully Negotiating with Terrorists.” Sorry I couldn’t manage to include the link.
Francie Diep: "And if Congress wants to tax universities more, they can — and they’ve been trying to do that." Actually, the tax on endowments were increased from 1.4% to 8% for large university endowments. That large tax increase will reduce funds (donations) used for scholarships and for research. Endowment funds are generally given with specific uses in mind; they are not operating funds. Congress and Trump did not go after other tax-exempt entities, only universities.

Has a “culture” ever been turned as a consequence of “a hammer?”
