It wasn't just realtors. It also was bank, big developers, white supremacists and communities at large with development rules in place. I worked developing affordable hosing for many years- it still goes on but a little more secretly these days. Yes, we now have rules and regulations but very little enforcement.

The oligarchs and aspiring autocrats that control our government today are essentially the same kinds of sociopaths that spawned America’s original wedge issue of racism. Centuries ago, those in the business of taking people to be their slaves and taking everything from the Indigenous Peoples of North America (including their lives and lots and lots of real estate) had to rationalize their cruelty by creating a whole bunch of tragically lethal balderdash about the people they destroyed. Effectively propagandizing the fictional notion that there are multiple races in the human race gave the monied elites at the time a simple and powerful tactic to demonize the “others.” Once that social construct was infused in their culture, they were able to layer on other crap about how God clearly sanctioned slavery and who cares anyway because the folks they abused (and a lot worse) were of an inferior “race?” Although abortion and guns have made great wedges issues for the uber bad guys, racism has always been their go-to wedgie to separate our poorly educated citizens (those who learned to be bad at learning) from our citizens who have a passion for learning and choose to employ their critical thinking skills. The racists who are so readily angered and frightened are easy pickings for the predatory racists like Trump and his cabal of swamp creatures. As long as the oligarchs can exploit their powers of corporate personhood to control our government, they will continue to use their incessant racist propaganda to perpetuate fear and hate of the “others,” and the 6th Mass Extinction gets a bit closer every day.

Wealth. Houses are the wealth of the middle class. Redistribution of wealth is needed. Removing the home interest tax deduction is a policy perfect way to start moving the money. The greater the loan, the greater the wealth, the more you ‘pay’.
