I was so curious about how Nikole Hannah-Jones's decision played out in her family and community that I ended up subscribing to NYT just to read it--something I have steadfastly avoided for years.
The reason this article hooked me was precisely that I knew it would contain complexities that resisted easy judgment. I remember her choice when she made it ten years ago. I remember a similar choice made by a white family in her reporting. The courage of the decision and its moral complexity were so striking to me then.
The update is incredibly moving and nothing is tied up in a pretty little bow. I'm sad that people would read a human soul laid bare on the page and rush to judge as if it's the usual crap. WTF, did they even read it?
Any time I am checking news, which is really once a day, lol, if I see something somewhat, shall we say lol, worrisome, I then visualize all of us, lol some billions, all in a half walnut shell on a raging sea 🌊, it brings all of it to peace for me lol, after all we are all in the same boat 🛶

Anand, my first thought on reading the Hannah-Jones essay was, ‘what mother doesn’t get confronted by an angry teenage daughter about something?’ But this, this decision and the hoops she had to jump through with administrators and teachers and tutors was soul-wrenching. I think your Ink readers are perceptive and critical thinkers, not judgy. It’s sad to see how our public school system has been abandoned, not only by local and state government but sometimes by the teachers themselves. Here in Nashville public schools, ethical teachers and administrators have been terminated for speaking out about grade manipulation
My friend shared a FB post by Salem.Salem discussing Pink’s reaction to Macklemore. <At 77 I do know who Macklemore is but not Pink> His essay reminded me of your post “Feel curious again” The poem he wrote which was included in his post was profound. Therefore I subscribed to his SubStack, recommend it, took his survey thanking him and am on my way to an online bookstore to find more of his work

OK, Anand, you got me with this one. I'm preordering the book. I was going to wait until it was available in the library, but if I do that I won't be able to join in on all the fun. I don't know if anyone reads these comments, but in case you do, I'm hoping that we can spend several weeks with the book and not do a quick "read and on to the next thing." I'd like to have the opportunity to go a little deeper and spend some time with it in community.
Preordered at local radical bookstore, People’s Book, in Takoma Park, MD. They did not have an order in place for the book but perhaps we’ll change their mind! I’m so happy for you, Anand; can’t imagine how you’re gonna sleep until it’s birthed!! Savor these moments 😘
Just ordered the book from my local book store here in Chicago. I ordered over the phone so have no receipt since I have credit at the book store. Apparently they sold out of the ones they had in the store, FYI : )

Call the library and ask that they order it. It sometimes takes a while for the process. If enough call, maybe they will get more than one. 📚
