I waved the flag in Taos, NM at the Indivisible-MoveOn-Taos United rally last Monday, Memorial Day. Yes! It’s my country, too. I’m not giving up. I never did. I just can’t read legacy news. But I know what’s going on. I’m age 79 and a proud American who claims justice for all.
Amazing. "Remember that politics is downstream of culture, and you have to make your case in the culture if you are to have any hope down where politics begins. Refuse the stories that erase you. Refuse the idea that they can steal your country from you."
Anand - I saw her in Chicago and thought many of the same things. I've seen her a number of times and this was by far the most political show with the most imagery and metaphor behind her. Her art runs deep and she's been getting more focused in her political and philosophical messaging. Thank you for amplifying her work here! I don't think everyone understands how sophisticated her work is. She's an inspiration - a fierce, black woman artist and mom, who sees things very clearly right now.
My country is a good country. The flag is mine. I get to say what it stands for. You cannot take it away from me. I am not going anywhere. You may not like that but we in the United States of America call it freedom. I grant you yours as a matter of fact and you better grant me mine or you're going to hear about it.
Brilliant reflections, Anand!! Thank you!! The artists will always reflect what they see, feel, hear and help us along the way!!! Bruce Springsteen is doing his part, too!
Your piece made me feel good. And, man, can you write. Thank you.
I am reminded of when Kamala became the candidate. If you got swept up in her, it was about being swept up in hope, in positive outcomes, in the future. We didn’t have to feel we were defeated in our loyalty to a wonderful man who had suddenly become too old. For a moment, we felt hope. And then it died when Trump was elected. We can’t forget about how many of us felt that hope. It’s still there in 80% of us. It just needs recharging.
Fuck despair!
