Absolutely we should be supporting librarians and libraries, whose services are in danger of being cut. These days, I find my library to be a calming refuge from the current insanity, with vast resources to explore. If you can’t make it to your library, check out some e-books or an online movie. Ezra Levin, one of the co-founders of Indivisible, was just talking on Thursday's nationwide Zoom call (4/10) about the need to normalize peaceful protesting as a regular American activity, just as American as apple pie.
This came up in the context of people concerned that this regime would violently crack down on protesters, invoke the Insurrection Act, etc. By making peaceful—PEACEFUL—protests something everyone is used to as a normal part of life, it makes it much harder for this regime to feel like they can get away with turning the military or national guard on peaceful people. It's no guarantee, of course, but we've already seen that when faced with overwhelming public pressure, Trump and his enforcers back down. Normalize peaceful protests. And make them bigger and stronger and louder.
More Adrienne Rich, please. The idea that we (any one among us) can be disappeared is chilling, and increasingly likely UNLESS we start talking about and shouting about it. The forces behind our current crisis are largely shadowy and have been at the work of destroying our pluralistic democracy for years--Heather Cox Richardson's view is since the beginning of our Republic--almost like some archetypal Demiurge on the side of selfishness AKA evil. Time to take back our power. They can't disappear tens of thousands of us, but remember, please, if we don't stop them before Trump actually builds the new prisons he's proposed, the disappearances will increase. Look, please, at Argentina and Chile under autocracy. The bad guys would snatch dissidents, put them into planes or helicopters and toss them into the sea.

Regarding the cringe factor - It bothers me that Bernie was denounced by Clintonites back then. I felt dismissed in some Democratic friend circles for discussing his and Robert Reich’s message, as they quickly judged them as “too radical”. Apparently that is what people thought of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade when they “prematurely” resisted fascism. Glad that more people get it now, but it just makes you realize that we can be as unenlightened as those who elected this fascist. We ask if they will learn, but will “we”?
Lovely poem, beautifully spoken. Good ideas by Taino, from what I read in the brief about collective and lasting activism. I have had to be careful not to let myself become ill with it all, and I’m doing better with that. For me, activism has been impossible unless giving all, all the time. But that makes me a dull and bitter person who can’t keep quiet. So I’m learning how to manage myself through all of this without turning into a tyrant myself 🥰

Here is the thing about these protests... It makes it seem like these are "what democracy looks like". NO!
Democracy is the boring everyday participation in local and state Govt.
Democracy is joining local organizations helping others.
At the very least democracy is VOTING in every election at local, state and national elections. AT THE VERY LEAST.
It is NOT marching after an election result you don't like.
