BOOK CLUB: A democracy reading list
As we finish our reading of "Injustice," we share some background reading that illuminates the current crisis -- and points the way to the future
As members of the Ink Book Club know — and please spread the word! — we have devoted the last few weeks to a close reading of Carol Leonnig and Aaron C. Davis’s masterful Injustice: How Politics and Fear Vanquished America’s Justice Department. A month or so ago, the use of the verb “vanquished” in the book’s subtitle might have seemed too strong. But after witnessing what’s gone on in Minneapolis, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and elsewhere, it’s clear the authors were prescient.
This Wednesday, February 4, at 12:30 p.m. Eastern, the Ink Book Club will meet to announce our next selection, and as mentioned in a previous post, the new pick will lead us in an entirely different direction.
But before we get to that, below, for our Book Club members, I’ve put together a list of books that wrestle with some of the issues that have brought us to this crisis point.
I’ve been slowly digesting many of these books over the course of the last year, and while the messages in them aren’t always hopeful, they do help me contextualize and remind me that, amid the Trump chaos, there is a game plan for the future, and we need to continue to pay close attention to it. Let’s arm ourselves with knowledge.
We hope you’ll join us on Wednesday. The Ink Book Club is open to all of our supporting subscribers, so if you aren’t already a part of our community, become a member today.
