Hi. I very much appreciate your account of all the different kinds of people who are out and about overnight while those of us with homes and day jobs sleep. I am a retired geriatrician who helped create a new kind of housing + health care for older, frail, chronically homeless Veterans. The people! The stories! The unattended suffering! It's so important for those of us who live differently to come to know the stories, have conversations and think about how we might make the world a better place for all of us. Thanks for helping to make that happen. It's important and meaningful work.
Yeah. Such an empathetic description of unhoused culture in NYC. Each person presented with care and individuality and personality. Listen, talk, let them take the lead. It's the best message. I have many stories of my own relationships with unhoused folks in NYC, New Haven, and Philly. I learned it could be me or any of us. I get that you learned that lesson on your journey, as well.

I had an interesting conversation with a homeless man the other day and it became clear to me that, while he seemed detached from the present, he remembered details of the past very clearly. I was canvassing for a candidate in the midterms and he was telling me the guy was already in Congress 15 years ago and I was confused. I pulled up the info on my phone and he was right but he just didn't know the guy was running again.
This gave me a connection to ask him what he thought of the shelter in town. I wanted to test him to see if he knew it had been moved. He said it was ok but he couldn't get in there anymore. He was "locked out." So I was able to give him the new location. Not sure what he did with the info.
Thank you for making this excerpt available. As with all your other books, you are writing about something that is important to everyone in the county. I will watch the videos today, love that you are expanding the information with video. I can't wait for my books to arrive! Thank you again for your important work.

NYT Note: NYT always tries to get me to subscribe, even if it’s a “Gift Article”! Sometimes it’ll allow me to sign in, and then I can read (I do have an account/ID, but have never subscribed for $$).
Today, I opened the Excerpt; got pulled away for a couple minutes; then when I got back to the article, it was the "Subscribe today" screen. I Refreshed; that brought back the article for about 2 or 3 seconds, then back to "Subscribe Today, and by the way, you’ve reached your limit" (not the exact terminology, but that’s the idea).
So—do Gift Articles no longer get Gifted after [I’ve read] some specific # of them from same device?

**My Workaround, once I realized NYT was playing hardball, still worked**:
I Refreshed once more, and _immediately_ did Copy ALL (Cmd-A or Ctrl-A), BEFORE the page fully landed. Then Pasted that into my own doc. It came with a ton of stuff before and after the Excerpt (ads, many featured headlines, footer info, menus for everything else in the NYT, etc.). But the story WAS in there, in the middle, WITH the illustration. So I deleted the rest and kept the story.
To Anand—I HAVE preordered your (signed!) book, so I'm Paying where it counts!
I did enjoy your excerpt—how you show us the HUMANS involved, including those offering housing / social services, those tasked with upholding the law, and those who have no place else to go for rest or peace. You captured the discomfort (as someone on "the outside" but for the grace of God!) of watching people who are running out of options, along with the heart and compassion of those offering the helps they have available while keeping the dignity of the recipients foremost. And I'm sure that the outreach workers aren't paid nearly what their services are worth!

I read the excerpt in The New Yorker and I received a notice that the book has shipped. The excerpt brought many things to mind, one of which is how little of other people’s live we know. I was also struck by how helping others is not as simple as wanting to do so, each person has their own set of issues, longings, and needs. It is beautifully and sensitively written; I am looking forward to reading more.
