I pre-orderded a couple of weeks ago. After seeing you read your column yesterday, I am really looking forward to reading Man in the Mirror. What I found additionally instructive yesterday, and what resonated with me was your commitment to the sound, the rhythm of your writing. Never heard anyone but a poet talk of that - but I edit everything for sound and I am not a writer. And your thoughts on RHYME - brilliant. What a way to think through communication from multiple sides, angles, and viewpoints. [One troubling - less important!- item: I couldn't find the link to send out yesterday's substack reading. I am not especially skilled at anything internet-related but could you find someone as unfamiliar as I am and test things out so that "the willing but un-tech-savvy" can know what to do. (Don't spend too much time on this, your thinking, writing and interviewing is what's really valuable to me! - And eventually, I'll find someone who can show me how to do it.)

Am constantly inspired by your writing and interviews - I go first to your substack when I'm having a tough day in this tough world we're in. TY!

Yes, the rhythm is such a big part of how I approach it, but something that is not necessarily obvious unless you look for it. Or listen for it. You can share it by clicking on the headline, by the way, and that should take you to a link that could be shared.

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

Fiona! I’m so glad it’s gonna have some readers across the pond. I don’t have UK plans yet, but would love some.

I ordered it from Parnassus Books - the bookstore owned by Ann Patchett in Nashville

And I'm looking forward to your reading at the Brooklyn Public Library!

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

Wow! I’ve always wanted to see that store. And I’ll be very happy to see you in Brooklyn. Please come say hello.

It's amazing, a gem in a little strip mall. Talking with Ann Patchett was fabulous as well.

See you then!

You’re one of the clearest, most resonate, insightful, and hopeful voices of this moment. Your essays, along with Rebecca Solnit’s, are life rafts in a sea of despair and disinformation. I ordered your book the moment the preorder was available and can’t wait to read it. 🙏

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

You are too kind. Please tell my children these things.

I have pre ordered it.

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

Anne, I’m grateful to you!

I pre-ordered when you first announced it. I've read all your books. You explain things so well, and your intelligence and humanity shine through everything you write.

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

Read the whole list! Special award for you

Just pre-ordered it. Your NYT article made me want to read it even more. Looking forward to its arrival

I have ordered and given my two adult sons subscriptions to The Ink. As a life long activist and reader I read little in media these days. But read your work; for your intelligent clarity and moral core.

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

Janet, that means so much to me. Your sons are very lucky to have a discerning mom 😊

I've preordered. The True American was amazing. I'm looking forward to this one.

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

It’s actually the book that is most similar to the true American out of everything I’ve done

I pre-ordered the book. I know it will be a fascinating and thought-provoking read. Your concept of rhyming is intriguing—seeking underlying and overarching realities is something you do so well and which I find resonant. And, the theme of abandonment runs deep in the human experience.

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

I’m glad that concept resonated. Having the chance to air it out loud yesterday was helpful. I’ve thought about it a lot, but it was nice to be able to flesh it out for you all.

I pre-ordered it on the day you posted that it was available. I look forward to reading it!

Early bird gets the sentences!

Ordered way back when, when you first announced it. Several Anand fans in our little book club in Borrego Springs, California.

In case I have your attention, I have a question. One of the most powerful stories I've read was the story of Rais Bhuiyan that you told in The True American. So, my question. How come you don't provide a platform and raise his voice and that of his non-profit World Without Hate? I never hear you talk about the lessons that continue to be relevant. He has a new documentary called Pain and Peace that's making the rounds.

There, I did my part! 😊

Anand Giridharadas's avatar

Grateful for your book club! I’ve done many things with the remarkable Rais over the years. We’ve done public talks and other things. The book was published 12 years ago, so it’s less a part of my active conversations now, but not for any lack of love for the story!

Sanjiv Nanda's avatar

Yes, of course. Just reposts of World Without Hate would be powerful..

Regards.

I’m very excited for that event. Please come say hello in Chicago!

Yup, pre-ordered -- and will also tip off the local library.
